Not just for cowboys

Ponchos have made a surprise comeback this season in the form of knits. Who would have thought that such a strange clothing item, mostly worn by military cadets, kids at camp, cowboys, and those tourists who get stuck in the rain, would see such a fashion renaissance? The return of ponchos arrives in tandem with the return of modesty in dressing, however that doesn’t mean they can’t still be sexy. Ponchos in soft, thin knits can hug your curves and create a very feminine appeal, especially when purchased in gentle colors like pastels.

Ponchos originally served the purpose of affordably keeping outdoorsmen dry and warm. Since they are basically large pieces of fabrics with holes for the head provided, they are fairly easy to make and do not require much sewing expertise. They often used to be waterproof but also made of heavy wools to insulate the body and preserve heat. Because your arms are free, they are able to move around and hug your body to keep it warm. However, today’s ponchos serve more than a practical purpose. They look great and flatter every figure.

Along with ponchos come other hip advancements in shoulder dressing. Ponchos join opera capes, capelets, shawls, wraps, and serapes as this winter’s trendiest accessories. Why are these cover-alls so popular? They hide more than a sweater and they make very smooth lines. They allow for movement underneath as well. The silhouette that one of these ponchos creates is one of simplicity and elegance. They look equally great over tight jeans or shorter skirts. Because they are usually fuller coverage items, it is advised to wear them with these more figure baring bottoms.

Knit ponchos are easy for anyone to pull off, no matter what your body type. They are a simple way to look stylish and flatter your figure. The best of the new, chic ponchos are not simply plain and unembellished. The most sought after ponchos have fringe, buttons, folds, or other such distinguishing features. Bright colors and patterns are also popular. You can buy ponchos in shorter lengths so a tight top will be visible underneath or through a fringe of yarn. They often come with some kind of collar or turtleneck, even hoods. They can be cut diagonally, straight across, or in a diamond or rounded shape. If you have joined the recent knitting craze you can even try knitting one yourself suitable to your own tastes. They can be as large or small as you’d like them to be and you can personalize them for your own wardrobe.

Ponchos are at their most fashionable and superb when they are made out of delicate, figure hugging fabrics rather than heavier knits. Cashmere and pashmina are popular choices for the new, chic ponchos. Lightly woven cotton knits are also popular. Heavier knits can look great when paired with the right bottom (usually tight, fitted pants) but many women find that they cover too much. Delicate fabrics in a poncho can be both modest and accentuate your femininity at the same time.
